CHURCH SAINT MICHAEL
Culture
DESCRIPTION
The church of Sant Miquel de La Vall de Ebo is in the Baroque style and was built in 1623, possibly on a temple that survived the expulsion of the Moors in 1609, which in turn would have been built on the old mosque and houses a beautiful carving of the Virgin of the Forsaken, of the Vergara school. Currently, it is served by the parish priests of La Vall de Gallinera who travel weekly to officiate masses.
The temple is of simple construction, with an altarpiece façade and a stone plinth and threshold, surrounding the door in which, in its central keystone, we can read the year of placement of the threshold: 1908. The opening is closed with wooden doors lined with brass and decorative rivets, on which we can read the year they were veneered: 1816.
Above the door we can see an altarpiece of the titular saint, Saint Michael, fighting the devil to chain him. Saint Michael, also called the Matamoros, is a recurring saint who, along with other warrior saints such as Saint George or Saint Sebastian, are usually located in towns or territories that had a strong Muslim demographic and in which tensions and rebellions had usually been experienced.
Also noteworthy is its quadrangular bell tower, with four bodies and an upper finish, made entirely of stone, except for the upper finial, the result of a later remodelling. The third body houses loophole windows and the clock, while the fourth body houses the four bells arranged in semicircular arch windows and mouldings in the imposts.
