BENIRRAMA CASTLE
History
DESCRIPTION
Built in the 11th to 13th centuries to strengthen the defensive lines in the face of the Christian kingdoms. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1644.
From the morphological characteristics that can be observed, it may be an enclosure whose origin dates back to the Muslim period, with later reforms and transformations carried out in the Christian period.
Existing studies refer to the existence of remains dating from the 11th century to the mid-16th century.
It is located at the top of a hill with steep slopes whose topographic height reaches approximately 470 metres. The mound is a promontory that juts out steeply from the gently sloping hillsides that surround it. The present-day road runs along the slope of the enclosure, around it until it reaches the highest point, where the medieval access path leads to the castle.
The castle stands isolated on the hill and is visible from a considerable distance.
The castle has an irregular, elongated ground plan, with walls that adapt to the different topographical levels. Two enclosures can be distinguished, adjusted to the ground contours; the one in the northern half is larger and wider than the other in the southern half, which is much narrower.
The access slope is located on the eastern slope, protected by a square cube. It is currently closed by a gate, which prevents access.
A series of circular cubes are distributed and attached to the curtains. Their position and location do not appear to follow any predetermined criteria.
There are still standing walls from different periods, all of them medieval, and a cistern. (S. Varela).
