PENYA FORADÀ

PENYA FORADÀ

Nature

DESCRIPTION

The Foradada mountain range is the mountainous alignment that delimits the Vall on its southern slope. It is a mountain range formed by a reverse fault or thrust, as a result of the compressive stresses of the tectonic plates and the fracturing of the limestone layers. This has led to the formation of cliffs, crags, ridges and, therefore, an abrupt and steep relief. The highest peak is located on the hill of La Cruz (912 m.), although the most emblematic is La Foradà (737 m.), formed by a large rock arch that characterises the valley. The area around the hole shows signs of the existence of a cave with karstic formations, which may have collapsed and formed the current arch.

At the foot of the arch there are the remains of an Andalusian tower and, very close by, an ancient Bronze Age settlement. 1 km away is the cave ‘Obrada del Moro’, an old corral that gives access to a walled cave with large windows. It was formerly used to keep livestock and, perhaps, to imprison captives.

The site is in the middle of La Vall and can be accessed from several villages with paths that converge near the summit. The access from Benissivà-Benitaia, la Carroja or Alpatró leads to a crossroads that has traditionally served as a meeting point for excursions. It is also the natural path to La Vall d'Alcalà.
