From Palm Sunday until Easter Sunday, the majestic Holy Week of Pego joins the faith and the religious tradition to accompany the venerated images in procession. The images carried on portable platforms are of an exquisite beauty. The silence of the procession is broken when the drums and cornets of the brotherhoods sound, or when from any balcony a saeta (Flamenco verse) is heard. The candles illuminate the night, and the wax falls leaving a mantle on the road which will last for days. The popular fervour to the images of the Holy Week is so deep, especially to the Ecce-Homo, that people with promises follow them, some barefoot, during the path of the procession, which is 1,700m long.
On the Saturday before the Holy Week "The Proclamation of the Passion" takes place. All the musical bands parade, and at the end there is a recital of mixed voices, who sing religious "motets". In 2000, and for the first time, "La Passió de Pego" (popular singing which disappeared around the 50s) was sung.
On Holy Tuesday and Wednesday the "Salpassa" takes place. It is the feast that commemorates the farewell of Jesus before being crucified. It consists of a visit by the priest to all the neighbours that have decorated the sidewalks and streets with plants and flower petals.
On Wednesday night, the images are transferred to the Chapel of the Holy Ecce-Homo.
On Holy Thursday, there is a procession with all the images. This procession is remarkable due to its great solemnity.
On Good Friday, in the morning, Via Crucis with the meeting in the Paseo del Calvario. At night, procession of the Holy Burial.
On Easter Saturday the bakeries bake the traditional "Mona" (Easter cake) that are eaten on Easter Monday with all the family in the fields or on the beach.
On Easter Sunday the Virgin and the resurrected Son meet at the Pla de la Font., where spectacular pigeons are released, flower petals launched from balconies, a mascletà and the joy hymn, played by all the cornets bands of all the brotherhoods.
