WASHING PLACE OF ALCALÀ DE LA JOVADA
Sources / Washplaces
DESCRIPTION
The washing place was built in 1928 and restored in 1995.
The old washing places were open-air spaces, often located near rivers or water sources, where people, mainly women, gathered to wash their clothes with home-made soap, made from soda and animal fat.
These washing places not only served a practical function, but were also a social meeting place. Women took advantage of this time to chat, share stories, sing, eat what they had brought from home... while the clothes were drying. In addition, many of these washing places were built with stone and had a specific design that facilitated washing, such as stone benches and water channels.
Over time, many of these washing places have fallen into disuse due to modernisation and the advent of household appliances, but some have been preserved as part of the cultural heritage. Today, they are a reminder of how communities used to organise and support each other in their daily tasks.
In front we have an old olive mill, where olive oil was processed, which still preserves the typical elements of these buildings.
The most important sources have always served to irrigate orchards, both fruit and vegetable. And most have associated infrastructures designed to make priority uses. The exit of the water always fills a puddle, "Olbi", or barrel made of chopped stone or work. Often this first raft is elongated in shape to make it easier for cattle to drink, thus transforming it into a trough. From this, the water is led to a larger raft, often with the edges inclined towards the water, in order to assist in the task of casting. Most sources near the villages have this part well developed, and even a roof covers it to protect laundress women from inclement weather. An order was always fulfilled for the use of water: first people, then animals, then cleaning and finally for irrigation and if necessary to move a mill. For irrigation, shifts were made every 15-18 days depending on the capacity of the rafts and the surface to be irrigated. The furthest from upwelling was used to wash the clothes of sick people.
