PEGO:
- 17th January: “Sant Antoni del Porquet” (Saint Anthony, in Spain the patron Saint of the animals). The townsfolk join in the pilgrimage to the chapel dedicated to this saint to attend Mass and join the porrat and walk three times round the chapel, a local custom that is supposed to cure stomach aches.
- The last Saturday but one before the beginning of Lent, in other words, the Saturday before the Pego Carnival: the Baixada del riu Bullent. The participants in this curious event race down the river in homemade boats.
- Saturday’s Carnival: the “Gran Desfile de Disfraces” or fancy dress parade which each year takes place on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday.
- The Carnival ends with the “Pinyata” or Entierro de la Sardina (Burial of the Sardine). Everybody in Pego is in mourning and cries because of the death of Carnival (symbolised by a cardboard sardine). After the bonfire, a correfoc (fire race) gives a touch of light and colour to the night.
- 17th, 18th and 19th March: “Fallas” (huge colourful monuments made of “papier mâché”). In Pego there are three fallas: La Font, La Plaça-Natzaré and El Convent.
- April: Easter Week: The processions of the Passion of Christ, the Entombment and the Meeting of Christ and the Virgin Mary stand out.
- The last weekend of June: Moors and Christians: It is the most important of the local festivals. During the weekend, the Moorish and Christian factions arrive. Different events, such as the running of the bulls, are held the following week.
- Wednesday after the Moors and Christians: festival of the Holy Ecce-Homo, patron of Pego, was in conjunction with the feast of the Most Precious Blood in the past. A solemn procession is held. This procession brings the image of the Ecce-Homo back to its chapel from the parish church where it had been taken the previous day.
ADSUBIA:
Forna celebrates its fiestas in the second week of August in honour of San Bernardo Abad. In Adsubia, as far as religious celebrations are concerned, we should highlight the fiestas in honour of the Virgen de los Desamparados, la Virgen del Rosario, San Francisco de Asis and el Santísimo Cristo del Milagro in the first half of September. Both fiestas include Moors and Christians, processions, parades, open air dances, activities for children, etc.
LA VALL D’ALCALÀ:
- San Antonio Fiesta in Alcalà: the “Cremà del Pi”, when the village youths plant a pine tree in the main square and burn a big bonfire around it. The next day “butifarra” sausages are cooked over the embers and served free to neighbours and visitors.
- Fiestas in honour of the Patron Saint of Alcalà: take place at the beginning of August with numerous activities such as the Moors and Christians parade in honour of Al-Azraq and fancy dress night.
- Fiestas in honour of the Patron Saint of Beniaia: are celebrated in the third week of September and include a street supper for all the neighbours and visitors.
LA VALL D’EBO:
- Fiestas in honour of the “Mare de Déu dels Desemparats”: in the first weekend of August.
- The San Miguel fiesta: takes place with the traditional pilgrimage to the Cova del Rull. It is in the last week of September.
